Four Historic Houses in Staffordshire

Mark Redler Solicitors • Jan 24, 2020
This landlocked county in the West Midlands is home to the cities Stoke-on-Trent and Lichfield, as well as market towns such as Tamworth and Cannock. Staffordshire is home to plenty of historical sites of interest, from ancient Roman settlements to the centuries-old, Grade II listed Stafford Castle. There are also many historic houses to explore, leaving visitors spoilt for choice, so if you’re making a trip to Staffordshire anytime soon, see below for four of our favourite houses to visit.

Whitmore Hall
This hall in Newcastle-under-Lyme includes a rare example of a well preserved late Elizabethan stable block, as well as a 19th-century porch and the house itself, which is a fine example of late 17th and early 18th architecture. Popular visitor attractions including the Lime avenue, lake and landscaped gardens.

Chillington Hall
This Grade I Georgian country house is located just outside of Wolverhampton and includes a park and lake designed by the famous landscape architect Capability Brown. The hall has been home to the Gifford family for over 800 years, and the current hall (built in 1724) is the third property to have been built on the site.

Weston Park
This luxurious 17th-century mansion also features over 1,000 acres of gardens designed by Capability Brown, as well as monthly exhibitions in the mansion’s art gallery. There’s also a Victorian library containing over 3,000 books, unique Gobelin tapestries and works of art by Sir Anthony van Dyck and Sir Peter Lely.

Shugborough Estate
This National Trust property near Great Haywood includes a Georgian mansion house, walled and kitchen gardens and a model farm. The house is open to the public and there’s plenty to explore, including the servant’s quarters, formal gardens and the apartments of Patrick Lichfield, a fashion photographer and 5th Earl of Lichfield.
